The subject pronoun takes the position of the subject in the sentence.

Usage of the Subject Pronouns

  • Je: replaces the speaking person (I). It's also used as j’ before vowels and silent h.
  • Tu: replaces the person someone is talking to (you).
  • Il or elle: replaces the object or person we are talking about (he, she or it).
  • Nous: replaces the people who speak, including "me" (us).
  • Vous: replaces the people you talk to and also as polite form (you).
  • Ils or elles: replaces the people or things we are talking about (they).

Subject Pronouns in the 3rd Person

The 3rd person singular and plural differ in male and female:

  • Il: subject is masculine.
  • Elle: subject is feminine.
  • Ils: subjects are only masculine or mixed.
  • Elles: subjects are only feminine.
