We have already covered the usage of subjunctive mood on our grammar page , so let's talk about how it's formed.

Translation

Je veux que tu partes.

I want you to leave.

Forming the Subjonctif

Rule 1: To form the subjonctif, you need to use the third person plural of the present tense, remove the -ent ending and add the respective ending: -e, -es, -e, -ions, -iez, -ent.

For example, here is how the verb attendre (to wait) is conjugated in the sunjonctif.

que j'attende
que tu attendes
qu'il/elle/on attende
que nous attendions
que vous attendiez
qu'ils/elles attendent

Note: Irregular verbs have different conjugated forms in the subjonctif - you can only memorize them.

Subjonctif with Avoir and Être

Rule 2: The verbs être (to be) and avoir (to have) are irregular in the subjonctif. For example, here's the conjugation of the verb être:

que je sois
que tu sois
qu'il, elle, on soit
que nous soyons
que vous soyez
qu'ils, elles soient

Native

Translation

Je veux que tu sois plus concentré.

I want you to be more concentrated.

And here's the conjugation of avoir:

que j'aie
que tu aies
qu'il, elle, on ait
que nous ayons
que vous ayez
qu'ils, elles aient

Native

Translation

J'aimerais qu'il ait moins peur.

I want you to be less scared (have less fear).
